Resolving Doubts, 2016 Cold Dew II
Written and photographed by Lin Hsin-Chen

“I wish I could turn back the time…”
But it is an illusion that will never come true.
Nature quilts make people adjust fabric matching spontaneously and desire to know what the changes can be with different pieces and how far imagination can go.
However, the ever changing design can be a problem.
What if you find out the best combination after the work is completed?
Being indecisive and confused… for the sake of perfection.
As I said, the principle of our class is creating different works that you want.

Your original design and your state of mind in making white papers become fabric pieces are the decisive factors of vitalizing your nature quilts and telling stories with needle and thread.
A good piece of art quilt make people relax and immerse in the artistic conception.
In spite of representational art, the beauty of lines and texture is rather eye-catching and moving.
On the contrary, an unsatisfactory work is only an ordinary needlework which only describes landscape and plants.

We often worry too much about short-term gain and loss.
“Do my birds look good?”
“Is my tree too yellow?”
“Are there too many colors in my flower garden?”
“Is my sky too gray?”
Some start to lose patience, and some start to compare with others.
Thus, confidence can be affected.
Some are eager to change fabrics, and some are rush to raise questions.
Fortunately, after my explanation, the tense atmosphere changed.
It seems like nature quilt has the power of soothing people’s emotion.
There are laughter and applause. Incredible!

Self confidence comes from accumulating successes.
Let us release our aesthetics, imagination and self-confidence through art quilting.
Make creations abundant, and make your life colorful. And feel fulfilled and satisfied.
Find your value and built up your confidence.
Understand your advantages and disadvantages. And be your own mentor.
Always be eager to learn. And enjoy the fun of sharing with others.
Improve your inner-self whenever you can.
Read widely and correct concepts.
Distinguish right from wrong. Face challenges with courage.
By doing so, you would find both your needlework skills and state of mind improved.

I noticed that most of the students are not good at taking notes.
Here are a few tips:
1. Take notes of a quilt a time.
2. Write down your feelings and ideas anytime during the creating process, include time and place.
3. Write down any phrases or sentences that come to your mind while creating. Most importantly, remember to add your comments.
4. Needlework is time-consuming. It can happen in any time and space. You might have different feelings under diverse circumstances. Therefore, write down any associated ideas since it could be helpful for your future works.

The first unit of this semester had come to an end.
The whole process went smoothly as planned.
Hope such success bring motivation to my study of teaching method.
Glad to complete the first renewal project last night.
Best wishes to our future challenges! Let’s go forward!
Our new project starts on October 23. See you on Sunday!
