2014 Horizons of Art Quilts - Curatorial Intent

Curatorial Intent: Inseparable Needle and Thread

Taiwan Art Quilt Society (TAQS) aims at providing a storytelling platform for both professional artists and amateur quilters, praising the value of art quilts and forming an interactive quilting community.

"Quilting" is a global artistic vocabulary, a unique art form and an ancient heritage of craftsmanship. What is the different between Taiwanese and international quilting style? How did it develop? How to distinguish between them? Taiwanese quilters are not the only ones who are curious about the answers. In the development of international art quilting nowadays, any kind of limitation or rigid framework is not allowed to be put forward. The key is the growing of free market that promotes “creative liberalization and narration”. Undoubtedly, they are connected to cultural promotion that blends interpersonal relationship and related records in the works, which also can be seen in the 51 selected quilts in Horizons of Art Quilts 2014 (HAQ2014).

Cooperation is never easy, let alone the “Round Robin Quilt Creative Project”, an international cooperation project that connects three countries. As part of the curatorial plan of HAQ2014, TAQS spent 3 years collaborating with 60 quilters from Taiwan, Japan and South Korea and coming out with 60 quilts. The creativity of Taiwanese quilting is once again proved and upgraded to an unpredictable level. The project not only evokes new vision, new ideas and infinite creative inspiration, but also brings valuable experience and improvement that guide the participating Taiwanese quilters to a different quilting field. The perfect combination of quilters, fabric, needle and thread opens a new chapter in the development of Taiwanese quilting.

This is not only a full range curatorial plan, but also our first ever international Horizons of Art Quilts. We will be planning a variety of events throughout the exhibitions all over Taiwan so that the strength of curating and the quality of selected quilts complement each other.

SAQA Color Wheel of Emotions: A Conversation with Fiber Artist Hsin-Chen Lin

The Curator of SAQA Color Wheel of Emotions, Carol R. Eaton, interviewed Lin Hsin-Chen. This interview was originally posted on Facebook (URL: https://www.facebook.com/ColorWheelOfEmotions). Here is the complete interview!

Fiber Artist Hsin-Chen Lin explains how she got started working with fabrics!

Carol: Your juried exhibition piece, Warm Love, is a beautiful work of fabric art. The overall design incorporates wonderful memories created in honor of your mother! Your materials include a sweater, mono printed cotton, commercial cotton, beads, and the paillette technique, (small shiny objects applied in a cluster). Where did you learn such a unique approach to fiber art?
