Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 4) Challenge 6

Title of work: The Glorious Moment

Theme: Line (proposed by Lin Hsin-Chen)

In January 2017, we had a family travel. Flying from Taipei to Frankfurt, the flight information was shown on the touch-screen. The special line showed me the route of how we leave the Earth’s surface and move to the next city. Though it was just an ordinary image, it gave me lots of ideas and thoughts at the moment. I don’t know why, but after seeing the flight route, I start to see things differently. My viewpoints changed! I am grateful for the trip to Germany!

The word for this challenge is Line. Think about the connection and movement of lines, how do you interpret the word? Happy creating to you all!

Artist Statement:

Congratulations to the athletes from around the world! Hosting the Summer Universiade is a glory of Taiwan. It is an honor to provide well-organized venues for the players to compete with each other and celebrate their sporting effort. Welcome to Taiwan. Let’s make friends and cultural exchange with the global citizens.

I started creating the quilt just one day before the opening of Universiade. I imagined a picture of lots of lines being pulled out from the earth’s surface and headed to Taiwan for the games. I would like to sew a colorful flower bouquet to welcome and cheer for the players! I was in high spirits as the competition results announced. It is hard to conceal my inner enthusiasm, and therefore I created the plentiful work.

Only second to the Olympic Games, the 2017 Summer Universiade is hosted by Taiwan. The 23 million people of Taiwan are of one mind about the cheerful event to welcome athletes and guests from around the world. I can totally relate to this since I had curated 3 international quilt exhibitions in Taiwan. In order to make the event runs smoothly, we band together and work as a team to complete the impossible mission. It is never easy, but it is such a glorious moment. It is my great honor to capture the moments with needle and thread.

Materials: commercial cottons, self hand dyed fabrics, embroidery floss, metallic thread
