International Exchange -- Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 6) Challenge 1–Grandmother's Flower Garden

Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 6) Challenge 1

Title of work: Grandmother's Flower Garden

Artist Statement:

I sorted out fabric scraps beside the sewing machine left by my mother and used the materials that she had accumulated over the years to create this work in memory of her. It was only during the sewing that I realized how a woman cultivates herself continuously from young to elderly in her lifetime. This is the last lesson she taught me.

Recalling my childhood, most of the time I sat beside my mother’s sewing machine, listened to her sing and tell stories while sewing. It was because she had to make money to support the family. In fact, like my mother, I don’t like to be tied to a sewing machine. I’d rather go out to see the beautiful world. I sewn such feeling and self-experience into the work. She taught me that hand sewing is an unlimited happiness to take along, and there are profound wisdom of life in needle and thread that you can explore.

Materials: Chiffon, Japanese kimono fabrics, linen, satin, gauze, silk, netting, dyed fabrics, cotton prints, lace, embroidery floss, metallic thread, beads, sequin, Romanian thread

Techniques: 100% hand stitched (pieced, appliquéd, quilted)

Size: H 60" x W 48"

Ideas and Thoughts:

My theme for the current challenge cycle is Line. I really like to see the flight routes around the globe. It feels like every single line is pulling us to explore the novel world. Just like the title of my work, Deposit of Wisdom, if you reach every city (point) along with the line, you will find good harvest of wisdom. I’m creating a series of work documenting the places that I’ve visited and things that have inspired me or made me curious. I am looking forward to a pleasant creative journey. Best wishes to you all.

For the first line in my Line series, I would like to depict the needlework connection between me and my mother. My mom passed away on Mother's Day in 2019. The pain of losing her has continued unabated. The first work of my Line series will convey her wisdom, temperament, and strength. I am very honored to create a work for her.

My mom was a tailor and she made clothes for others. I've been fascinated by needlework since childhood. When she was young, she learned to sew from my grandmother and made the “three-inch golden lotus and clothes” for my grandma. The sewing tradition has been passed down to the third generation. It contains not only the techniques but also the humanistic connotation, which has influenced my deep expectations for creating. Thank you, Mom, for everything. I will be creating the work with my mother’s fabrics. Best wishes to our future.

This quilt is in memories of my mother. I try to depict her temperament by using the fabrics she left behind, her favorite quilt pattern and lilies. The fabrics left by my mom were orange and pink, so I use them for the flowers in my work.

International Exchange -- Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 9 - My Generation #3: LOHAS

Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 9

Title of work: My Generation #3: LOHAS

Theme: Wind

My Feedback: Beautiful Lugano

I traveled to Lugano, Switzerland. On the first night, it was heavy rain and strong wind. I watched wind and rain performing the whole night in the lakeside B&B. The wind blew the leaves and curled the rain. It was a huge stage of Nature. The performance was phenomenal. The next morning I strolled along the beautiful lakeside. It was so quiet and peace. It felt like two worlds comparing to the night before. I really like Lugano and I visit there every time I go to Switzerland. I even hope to have a chance to live there for a longer time and be LOHAS! Best wishes to everyone!

Artist Statement:

Flowers are scattered by the winds, just like my no-longer-young self. Keeping such a unique gesture and charm, living a happy life, and being happiness and at ease, it is the LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) generation.

In the second half of life, I am looking for a happy self living LOHAS. Care less about how others see you, but think more about how to live a meaningful life. Try to create a LOHAS environment, upgrade the living conditions, and turn your hobby into a career. Loving the Earth, caring about the ecology, and stepping out of your comfort zone to serve people are not only a dream of living LOHAS but also a brand new motive of life. Thank you, Misik Kim, for the prompt. Best wishes to everyone!

International Exchange -- Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 8 - My Generation #2: Accountability

Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 8

Title of work: My Generation #2: Accountability

Theme: Color & Light

My Feedback: Look Closely and You will Find Beauty

The masterpiece of nature is to do all the details to the extreme.

In life, the ubiquitous plants bring joy to people and they are always there.

The tender and soft flowers and plants use all colors to remind people the value of life.

Finding inspiration gives us a sense of pleasure and hope.

I enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Artist Statement:

Wild sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) is my favorite. I found it very suitable to describe myself as a wild sunflower after my 20s. Its flowering period is short but brilliant. Most importantly, its freedom makes me envious. I have been trained as a responsible person since I was a child. Little by little, it has become a habit that makes me enjoying my courage of undertaking responsibility and keeping my face to the sunshine.

It was around Mother's Day when I was sewing this piece. My mother passed away peacefully in her sleep just before Mother's Day. It’s the law of nature. Her teaching and example made me a responsible person. She always said, “As women, we must redouble our efforts to learn. Be someone who can contribute to the society with wisdom. Look up to Nature and keep cultivating yourself. A woman is beautiful for her wisdom. Your inner-self is much more important.” I am creating 3 works in my Generation series (Self-Discipline, Accountability, and LOHAS) to document my past and future. It’s also a 60-year-old commemoration for me. Unexpectedly, it became a memorial quilt for me and my mother to celebrate our 60-year bonds. Thank God for his arrangements. Mom, I miss you so much. Love you forever! Thank you, Alicia, for the prompt.

International Exchange -- Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 7 - My Generation #1: Self-Discipline

Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 7

Title of work: My Generation #1: Self-Discipline

Theme: Generations

My Feedback: Internet Generation

We are influenced by computer technology, and smartphones have deepened the fascination. Even when we are alone, we cannot live without the internet. The photo shows how my husband and I become happy phubbers. I guess the entire internet generation shares my feelings!

Artist Statement:

My generation is like a flower, growing up in a tempting and complex environment. No matter how many seasons I have experienced, I keep myself disciplined to coexist with the world and feel the things I own. Like a flower, bloomed and faded in its lifetime, but happiness is still there and enthusiasm has not reduced. How brave, free, colorful, and always ready to share joy and love!

The source of a brilliant generation is the inner strength of oneself. Being determined and having the self discipline are the keys to change life and adjust oneself to the good. Growing up in Taiwan, known historically as Formosa (the beautiful island), it is reasonable to have an extraordinary method of self-training. It’s the self-education that I taught myself when I was young. The desire to contribute myself has been implemented since my early years and remained the same till now. I find happiness within and enjoy adversity and prosperity.

Thank you, Kate, for the prompt. I thought we are not exhibiting the last 3 works from cycle 5 together, so I've decided to work on a larger dimension, which is 132H x 91W (cm) each. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

Materials: recycled fabrics, hand-dyed fabrics, Romanian thread

Techniques: 100% hand stitched (pieced, appliquéd, embroidered, quilted)

Size: 52" H x 36" W

International Exchange -- Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 6- Coastal Erosion

Viewpoints 9 (Cycle 5) Challenge 6

Title of work: Coastal Erosion

Theme: Irreversibility

Can't get back to it. The state of natural occurrence, as time goes by and environment changes, it is impossible to return to the past. Think about the word, irreversibility, what’s the story that comes to your mind?

When I was sewing this piece of work, I kept asking myself, "Is this me?" It turned out that this is me NOW. Honestly, I can't quite accept the aging process!

Perhaps, each of us has an irreversible story to say? Happy creating!

Moved

Is this me? During a speech, one of the listeners hand painted my portrait. What was the feeling that motivated her to draw? Or, what did I say to inspire her? From the eyes of others, and then through drawing, I see what I look like when delivering a speech. It is so different from photography. I am so much moved! Indeed, this is me!

Materials & Techniques: artist’s hand-dyed fabric, silk, Romanian thread, shell buttons, sequin, beads/ image transfer, hand appliquéd, hand quilted

Artist Statement:

Sea level has been rising due to climate change. Taiwan, surrounded by the sea, is shrinking because of coastal erosion. The hollow rock is a serious threat to the ecological environment. The earth is getting old and climate change has accelerated the aging of the earth. This is an irreversible fact. I am sending blessings to our Earth with the work.

We only care about human aging, how about the aging of the earth? Since the effect of climate deterioration is wide-ranging, not only humans, but also the earth has to be saved. No one wants to be a climate refugee. No one wants to get older, and no one wants the earth's resources to run out. The definition of health is no longer a personal issue. Only if we expand into the global environment, we can realize a beautiful world. Let’s face new challenges, understand the future more deeply, and carefully formulate solution. "What kind of environment should we pass on to future generations?” The irreversible facts can no longer be mistakenly made by us. We firmly believe that the global environment has the opportunity to rejuvenate vitality and have unlimited circulation energy. Everyone is responsible for your actions. I believe it can be changed if we really want to. The strength will be expanded. Best wishes to our planet.

Materials: chiffon, hand-dyed fabrics, cotton prints, polyester, gauze, metallic thread, Romanian thread

Techniques: 100% hand stitched (pieced, appliquéd, quilted)

Size: 36" H x 24" W
