Walls of Dignitaries

Once upon a time, each dignitary had high walls in their homes.
Were they afraid of the prying eyes from outside or an estrangement inside?
What did they really want to prevent with glasses, nails, and iron nets on wall?
Was it to prevent people escaping from homes or to prevent strangers coming in?
High walls nowadays seem to be purgatories….
